Supporting Programme 2018
it-sa insights: European Cybersecurity Competence Centre and Network: why now, what for?
On 12 September 2018, the European Commission proposed the creation of a new European Cybersecurity Industrial, Technology and Research Competence Centre and a Network of Cybersecurity Competence Centres. The proposal is highly focused on bolstering Europe’s resilience against the ever-evolving threats coming from the cyber domain.
According to the planned Regulation, the Competence Centre will be responsible for managing huge EU financial resources dedicated to cyber security. However, European industry should play an important role as well. Successful and wise allocation of those funds, for research and now also the deployment of EU products and services, will take place only when all the stakeholders will be brought together. Europe needs its own cybersecurity strategic vision, investment objectives and industrial policy.
Thanks to its independent role, its growing membership, and its expertise in cyber security industrial policy, ECSO is coordinating the dialogue within the European cyber security stakeholder community. As a bridge between the private sector and the Commission, ECSO has all the practical tools to sustain the ‘community’ and to assist the Competence Centre and Network in its objective to retain and develop the technological and industrial cybersecurity capacities of the EU, enabling Europe to become one of the main global leaders in cybersecurity.
