mbEDGE is a modular IoT kit to expand the mbNET and mbNET.rokey industrial routers (with key switch) into a powerful and secure edge gateway. The additional functions for data collection and processing allow data to be pre-processed on the edge of the network (edge computing). Instead of transferring large volumes of raw data directly to the cloud, the collected machine and sensor data are evaluated locally and only the results obtained are uploaded to the cloud.
The edge gateway enables the user to create real-time capable industrial IoT applications, regardless of the available internet bandwidth and latency of communication with the cloud application. The close proximity to connected controllers and sensors makes it possible to detect operating states and deviations from setpoints quickly. This allows decisions to be made without delay. In addition, it is much easier to connect an additional sensor to the edge gateway – instead of expanding a cloud application accordingly.
mbEDGE is based on standards recognized in the IT world such as the Docker Container technology, the graphical development environment Node-RED and the lean message protocol MQTT. The system supports common cloud platforms such as Azure, IBM and Amazon. Access to plant data takes place via common industrial protocols such as OPC-UA, Modbus-TCP and S7-ISOTCP.
Industrial routers as a secure base
A highlight are the industrial routers mbNET and mbNET.rokey as a secure hardware platform for the edge gateway. A secure hardware element (cryptochip) and the secure boot concept provide a secure environment for your IoT applications. The data on the mbEDGE SD card is encrypted so that the user's data and know-how are optimally protected. Thanks to modern and established IT tools such as Node-RED, Docker and MQTT, the user receives a powerful construction kit for his own IoT solutions.
Flexible solution for secure IoT applications
Data are available on site and can therefore be used directly to obtain information for improving production processes. In the event of sudden irregularities in the plant, the systems can react in real time and, for example, alert the maintenance personnel or shut down the system before major damage occurs. In predictive maintenance, measured values and data can be used to proactively maintain equipment to prevent or at least minimize downtime. The data is physically stored within your own territory. This ensures the highest level of data security. Thanks to the routing options, faults in the system can be investigated and rectified by remote maintenance. The connection to common cloud platforms enables higher-level big data analyses and long-term archiving of the data.
Note-RED and Docker
With Note-RED, users can use a well-established tool for creating IoT applications. Thanks to the graphical user interface, even automation engineers without an IT background can quickly get to work. For more complex tasks, the user can create his own applications that are executed in a secured docker container. Another advantage is that the edge gateway also includes routers and firewalls. The possibility of retrofitting routers already installed in the field with mbEDGE ensures investment security.
