The complete digitalization of telecommunications allows new attack-scenarios, which have not been possible with legacy phone technologies before. The reason is that legacy phone technologies required physical access whereas nowadays internet-based communication, like voice over the internet protocol (VoIP), can be accessed via any random node. Thus, eavesdropping can happen everywhere and much easier. Additionally, injection of undesirable communication like SPAM or SPIT in digital networks is simpler too. Encryption is not sufficient because it is also necessary to know which participants are talking to each other.

For that reason the research project INTEGER aims at developing an electronic signature which secures authentication and integrity of a VoIP communication. Especially in the B2B and B2C sectors, current solutions lack proof of the confidentiality and reliability of communication. The aim is a completely new form of non-repudiation of verbal communication, which enables fundamentally more efficient business processes (among other things as proof of verbal contracts).

INTEGER is financially supported by the BMWi for two years (up to mid-2019). Research partners of DECOIT® GmbH, being consortium leader, are the University of Applied Sciences Bremen, Global IP Telecommunications und reventix GmbH. Associated partners are Fraunhofer SIT, Infineon and the University of Applied Sciences Mainz.
