Creating network visibility
Which IP addresses does my device connect to? Which services are being used? Which protocol has been used in my network? How much bandwidth does the VoIP require/How much bandwidth is the VoIP taking up? Which applications are running in the background? How much traffic is being received/sent per second (and by which device)? Which MAC addresses are active in our network? Which countries is my device sending and receiving data from? Finding the answers to these questions takes time, money and know-how.
Identifying networks problems
Does every device have an IP address? What is the current latency of my web connections? Who or what is blocking my connections? Which connections is my device making in the background when I open a web page? What is the geolocation of a server for my connection? How can I capture the traffic for a specific device or connection? Which ports are open for a specific IP address? All these questions can be answered by a network administrator but this can take a lot of time.
The heterogeneity of computer networks
10 years ago networks consisted of Windows or Linux devices. This has changed due to new operating systems and network functions. The Internet of Things has led to the introduction of a wide range of online systems such as alert systems and thermostats. In addition, more and more services are hosted externally and are based on new protocols. Many of these devices do not allow for the debugging of network connections – the very thing that can provide network administrators with valuable information.
Increasing network traffic
Network traffic is growing continuously. The amount of VoIP, video-streaming, file and picture transfers to clouds has been on the rise every year. All in-line devices such as routers, switches and firewalls have to deal with the packet flow in real- time. A question facing every administrator: which device is causing a high packet loss or increased latency?
